Dartmoor is a superb location for learning navigation in poor visibility and at night, camp craft and group leadership; the 3 day expedition across the moor is a fantastic opportunity to put you new found skills to the test.

The group will also go to north Wales to gain further experience of mountainous environments. You will learn the skills to enable you to attend the summer Mountain Leader training course which is also held in north Wales.

Included in this phase is:

  • Use of maps, grid references, scales
  • GPS
  • Understanding contours
  • Pacing and timing distances
  • Expedition planning
  • Night navigation
  • Dealing with water hazards
  • Dealing with steep ground
  • Weather
  • Emergency procedures
  • Access and conservation

The ML course is a nationally recognised walking award allowing the holder to lead groups in the mountains across the UK. It is governed by the Mountain Leader Training Board UK (MLTUK). To attend the ML training course you will need to register with the British Mountaineering Council and the MLTUK www.mltb.org for which there is a charge.
