Course Details

The programme will run Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm, except for overnight expeditions. It is a completely practical course so you will be out walking, kayaking, canoeing or climbing every day.

The four weeks is broken into 4 phases.

Climbing
Your climbing will progress from learning basic techniques in movement, rope work, belaying and safety to challenging yourself on some harder climbs. By the end of the week you will have been introduced to the principles of setting anchors, route finding, single and multi-pitch climbing. You will also be guided on choosing your own equipment and how to move forward with your climbing.

Walking and Navigation
You will be taught the navigation techniques of how to use maps and compass, understanding contours and how to pace distances. There will be plenty of opportunities to test your navigation in small groups and alone, there will also be an introduction to night navigation. This phase will culminate in a 2 day expedition across
Dartmoor where you will carry your own equipment to be completely self sufficient. Preparation for this will include equipment choice, route planning, safety and emergency procedures.

Kayaking
The kayaking phase introduces you to paddling on flat water, by the end of the phase you will feel confident about exploring placid rivers. You will be taught paddle strokes to manoeuvre and control your kayak, you will also learn how to manage a capzise,, rescue yourself and others. At the end of the phase when your confidence has grown there will be the chance of testing your skills either in the surf or some gentle moving water.

Canoeing
Many of the skills from the kayak phase translate into canoeing, however the key skill of canoeing you will learn is how to paddle a canoe solo. During the week you will explore the southwest’s finest tidal estuaries and experience the pleasure of silently moving through a remote valley catching glimpse of wildlife. You will plan and equip yourself for a 2 day river expedition, carrying your tent and cooking equipment in your boat.
