Week 6 - North Wales
3 days of Swift Water Rescue training in north Wales and 3 days of walking has provided the students with a fresh wave of challenges this week. The Swift water rescue was, as always a very exciting course giving everybody the opportunity to get in the rivers and build their confidence about being in fast flowing water. The focus of the course is about controlled and safe rescue which puts the rescuer first and requires people to act decisively under extreme pressure. The students learnt about the hydrology of rivers, weirs, stoppers and how to respond if you find your self swimming down the river. It also looks at rigging rope systems across the river to retrieve victims, the use of pulleys and mechanical advantage. Its a fantastic course that has underpinning knowledge for the SPA and the ML syllabus.
Our walking days this week took us up and over the Glyders for a great day in the hill plus some more localised walking with the students practising micro navigation.
